John C. Malone
Chairman of the Board
Dr. John C. Malone - is Chairman of the Board of Liberty Media Corporation, Liberty Broadband Corporation and Liberty Global plc. From 1996 to March 1999, when Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI) merged with AT&T Corp., he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TCI. Previous to that, from 1973 to 1996, Dr. Malone served as President and Chief Executive Officer of TCI. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Qurate Retail, Inc., Warner Bros. Discovery and Charter Communications, Inc. Additionally, Dr. Malone is Chairman Emeritus of the Board for Cable Television Laboratories, Inc.
Born in 1941 in Milford, Connecticut, Dr. Malone was a Phi Beta Kappa and merit scholar at Yale University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Economics in 1963. He also received a Master of Science in Industrial Management from Johns Hopkins in 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Operations Research from Johns Hopkins in 1967. He has received two Honorary Degrees for Doctorate of Human Letters; the first from Denver University in 1992 and the second from Johns Hopkins University in 2012.
Dr. Malone began his career in 1963 at Bell Telephone Laboratories/AT&T in economic planning and research and development. In 1968, he joined McKinsey & Company and in 1970 he became Group Vice President at General Instrument Corporation (GI). He was later named President of Jerrold Electronics, a GI subsidiary.
He served as Director of the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) from 1974 to 1977 and again from 1980 to 1993. During the 1977-1978 term, Dr. Malone was the NCTA's Treasurer.
In 1983, Dr. Malone received the NCTA Vanguard Award, one of the highest honors in the cable television industry. He has received many other awards and honors which include: TVC Magazine Man of the Year Award - 1981; Wall Street Transcript's Gold Award for the cable industry's best Chief Executive Officer - 1982, 1985, 1986 and 1987; Wall Street Transcript’s Silver Award in 1984 and 1989; Women In Cable's Betsy Magness Fellowship Honoree; University of Pennsylvania Wharton School Sol C. Snider Entrepreneurial Center Award of Merit for Distinguished Entrepreneurship; American Jewish Committee Sherrill C. Corwin Human Relations Award; Communications Technology Magazine Service and Technology Award; Bronze Award - 1993 Financial World CEO of the Year Competition; The Hopkins Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1994 and in 2004 the Hopkins Medal, the school’s highest award; Steven J. Ross Humanitarian Award from the UJA Federation New York in 2016; National Western Stock Show’s Citizen of the West in 2017. He is also recognized as a Yale Sterling Fellow (Harkness Circle).
Julie D. Frist
Mrs. Frist has been a director of Liberty Broadband Corporation since March 2020. She has served as Vice Chair of CapStar Financial Holdings, Inc. since 2017 and as a director of CapStar Bank since 2008. After graduating from Yale University, Mrs. Frist worked for Goldman Sachs as a financial analyst in its Investment Banking Division (Corporate Finance) and returned to Goldman Sachs to work in its Private Client Group after receiving her M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. She later joined Bruckmann, Rosser, Sherrill & Co., a New York-based private equity firm, where she worked until 2000. Mrs. Frist also serves on the board of The Frist Foundation, The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, the Tennessee Golf Foundation, the Advisory Board of Teach for America – Nashville and is a member of the Board of Dean’s Advisors at Harvard Business School. She is a former board member of St. Paul’s School, the Ensworth School and the American Red Cross (Nashville chapter).
J. David Wargo
Mr. Wargo has been a director of Liberty Broadband Corporation since March 2015. He is the founder and president of Wargo & Company, Inc., a private company specializing in investing in the communications industry since 1993. Mr. Wargo is a co-founder and was a member of New Mountain Capital, LLC from 2000 to 2008. Prior to starting Wargo & Company, he was a managing director and senior analyst of The Putnam Companies from 1989 to 1992, senior vice president and a partner in Marble Arch Partners from 1985 to 1989 and senior analyst, assistant director of research and a partner in State Street Research and Management Company from 1978 to 1985.
Mr. Wargo has served as a director of Liberty Broadband Corporation since March 2015. He has also served as a director of Liberty Global plc since June 2013, having previously served as a director of Liberty Global, Inc. from June 2005 to June 2013 and as a director of Liberty Media International, Inc. from May 2004 to June 2005. He has served as a director of Strayer Education, Inc. since March 2001. He served as a director of Discovery Communications, Inc. from September 2008 until April 2022, after having served as a director of Discovery Holding Company from May 2005 to September 2008.
Gregory B. Maffei
President & Chief Executive Officer
Greg Maffei – oversees the Liberty family of companies as they compete in the digital mobile era. Liberty's stocks have consistently outperformed the indexes and peers. Liberty Media ranked #8 in Fortune’s 2022 World’s Most Admired Companies in the Media & Entertainment Industry.
Maffei serves as President and CEO of Liberty Media Corporation, which owns media and entertainment businesses, including subsidiaries Formula 1, SiriusXM and the Atlanta Braves, and an interest in Live Nation Entertainment. He is President and CEO of Liberty Broadband Corporation, which consists primarily of a 26% stake in Charter Communications and subsidiary GCI. Maffei also serves as Chairman and CEO of Liberty TripAdvisor, which holds a controlling interest in Tripadvisor.
In addition, Maffei serves as Executive Chairman of Qurate Retail, Inc., which owns digital commerce businesses, including subsidiaries QVC, HSN, Zulily and the Cornerstone Brands. Maffei also serves as Chairman of the Liberty-related companies Live Nation Entertainment, SiriusXM and Tripadvisor, and as a Director of Charter Communications and Zillow.
Prior to joining Liberty in 2005, Maffei served as Co-President of Oracle, Chairman and CEO of 360networks, and CFO of Microsoft. He has also served as a Director of Barnes & Noble, Citrix, DIRECTV, Dorling Kindersley, Electronic Arts and Starbucks and was Chairman of Expedia and Starz.
Maffei is a member of the Board of Trustees of Dartmouth College and Council on Foreign Relations. He has an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar, and an AB from Dartmouth College.
Richard R. Green
Dr. Richard Green has been a director of Liberty Broadband Corporation since November 2014. Green has served as a director of Liberty Global plc and its predecessors since December 2008. He has also served as a director of Shaw Communications, Inc., a telecommunications company based in Canada, since 2010. Green serves as a director of Jones/NCTI, a Jones Knowledge Company, which is a workforce performance solutions company for individuals and broadband companies. He is former Chairman of the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado. He is a Professor of Engineering and Director of the Center of Technology and Innovation at University of Denver.
Green is the former President and CEO of CableLabs®. Before joining CableLabs®, Green served as an executive for three television networks, ABC, CBS, and PBS. In 2012, Green received an Emmy for Lifetime Achievement from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for technical contributions to television. He is also a member of the Cable Television Hall of Fame.
Sue Ann Hamilton
As Principal of the consultancy Hamilton Media LLC (Hamilton Media), Ms. Hamilton advises and represents major media and technology companies. In this role, she serves as Executive Vice President—Distribution and Business Development for AXS TV LLC, a partnership between founder Mark Cuban, AEG, Ryan Seacrest Media, Creative Artists Agency and CBS, and she represents The Mark Cuban Companies/Radical Ventures as board observer for Philo, Inc., a privately held technology company. Prior to launching Hamilton Media, from 2003 until 2007, she served as Executive Vice President—Programming and Senior Vice President—Programming for Charter, the cable and internet service provider. Before her work at Charter, she held numerous management positions at AT&T Broadband LLC. and its predecessor, TCI dating back to 1993. Prior to her career in technology, media, and telecommunications, she was a partner at Chicago-based law firm Kirkland & Ellis, specializing in complex commercial transactions. She received her J.D. degree from Stanford Law School, where she was Associate Managing Editor of the Stanford Law Review and Editor of the Stanford Journal of International Law. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.
Gregg L. Engles
Mr. Engles has served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of The WhiteWave Foods Company (WhiteWave) from October 2012 to April 2017. He previously served as Chief Executive Officer of Dean Foods Company, WhiteWave's former parent company, from April 1996 until WhiteWave's initial public offering in October 2012
John E. Welsh III
Mr. Welsh has been a director of Liberty Broadband Corporation since November 2014. He has served as the President of Avalon Capital Partners LLC, an investment firm, since 2002. Mr. Welsh has served as a director of General Cable Corp. since 1997 and Chairman of the Board since August 2001. He served as a director of CIP Management LLC from October 2000 to December 2002, and as Managing Director and Vice-Chairman of the Board of SkyTel Communications, Inc. from 1992 to 1999. Prior to 1992, Mr. Welsh was Managing Director of Investment Banking of Prudential Securities, Inc. and Co-Head of the Mergers and Acquisitions Department. While at Prudential Securities, Inc., Mr. Welsh advised a number of clients in the cable industry, including Turner Broadcasting, the Financial News Network and the founder of ESPN. Mr. Welsh previously served as a director of Spreckels Industries, Inc., York International, Inc. and Integrated Electrical Services Corp.
